Why do PS2 games display this way on backwards compatible models?
I obviously get that a game being rendered in 4:3 isn't going to touch the edges of a widescreen display unless it is stretched into 16:9, but how come they don't touch the tops and bottoms of the screen either? I chose GTA 3 as an example since it's one of the few PS2 games to natively support 16:9, and, while I don't have an image for it, I can tell you that, while setting it to widescreen and setting the PS3's PS2 game upscaler to "off" or "full screen" does render the game in 16:9, it still doesn't touch any of the edges of my screen. Rather, it's a 16:9 image being displayed with a black outline around it. This applies to PS1 games as well. It doesn't really bother me, I was just wondering why it happens.
