Ski Season Camp Spots near Taos, NM
Hi all! Going to make my way over from FL to Utah in March for skiing this season. For some context, there are plenty of campsites in the salt lake area that aren’t in the mountains, but very close to the mountains, and March-onwards temps (typically doesn’t get below freezing at night) are ok for trailers. Ofc I will have my winterization mods, but that’s besides the point.
On the way to Utah I’d like to stop and shred Taos for a few days as I’ve never been. However, I haven’t been able to find any campsites that are open for mid-late February (due to seasonal temps) or ones that are open, but have reasonable enough temps for my trailer. My concern is staying somewhere for only a few days/a week at most and running the risk of freezing pipes or any other nonsense that could damage the trailer (I will be living in it so need showers, etc, I will not just be leaving the trailer somewhere).
So my question is, any recommendations on campsites WITHIN 1hr to Taos ski valley that have warm enough temps in mid-late February to bring my trailer? Doesn’t have to be a campsite, could be a boondocking spot or something of that sort. Trying to have my cake and eat it here: ideally, I find a spot that I don’t have to drive more than an hour to get to the mountain every day, but it’s also warm enough that there isn’t “huge” or “probable” risk of damaging my trailer due to the temps. Any recommendations on spots, advice on closer spots/things I can do to stay warm/safe, slightly further spots that will have what I need, or stories if you’ve camped there yourself during ski season, would be very welcomed! I want to be clear that I’ve never been to the area, so maybe it’s also just completely different from Utah where there are warmer climate spots pretty close to the mountains and I’m just a moron for thinking it’s possible. Feel free to tell me that too 🤪 extra context: I have a 30ft travel trailer towed with an f150, so I don’t have the smallest footprint either.
