Teacher keeps suggesting a diagnosis.
I have a first grader who is having a hard time with reading. She is currently in a private school and I pay out of pocket for extra reading classes. We also read a lot at home. She is struggling, specifically with phonics. She does well with math and other subjects. She’s an easy going kid and doesn’t have any behavioral issues at home or at school. Does good in math and is very artistic. The teacher keeps telling me if we could get her a diagnosis then we can get her more help. What diagnosis are they looking for? Like ADD/ADHD? Can a child just be a slow reader and not require a diagnosis? Thanks for any help.
Edit- thank you for everyone who read my post and answered my questions. Your information has helped a lot. At no point do I plan to not test her and the sooner the better. I simply wanted to know what the diagnosis she would be looking for and if she is labeled a “slow reader” will she not receive help. I think a lot of you answered my question without assumptions. She attends private school so that’s the only reason it has not been done and because of the answers below if contacted our local district to get her tested asap. I am very grateful for her teacher and her attentiveness to my child. Thank you!
