Does Alberta Health have the credibility to continue w “refocusing” the health system in light of last week’s news?
So - we all saw the news last week where the GoA is accused of firing the AHS CEO as she was about to speak with the AG about potentially significant government interference with AHS procurement processes. They are also accused of firing the Board after it supported referring the matter to the RCMP for criminal investigation.
The CEO was replaced by the Deputy Minister of Health, who was actually the one who fired the CEO. The Board was replaced by an Official Administrator who is, coincidentally, the same Deputy Minister of Health. That’s one man being the president and CEO of AHS, the Official Administrator for the same and the DM of Health.
Our Premier raised her head three days after the accusations were reported to say she did no wrong and that she wanted the results of fast tracked investigations delivered directly to her. She did not deny interfering in procurement. She did not deny directing the firing of the Board and CEO. She did not commit to transparency and release of the findings of any of the investigations that she has purportedly requested or directed.
The DM/CEO/OA of AHS was scheduled to do an all staff Town Hall on Friday. It was rescheduled 4 times and is currently slated for 0900 tomorrow. He was expected to either announce that the corporate shared services (like IT etc) are spinning off from AHS shortly or was to set the stage for that announcement within the next week or so.
This procurement thing seems to be the tip of the iceberg for how deep the UCP are implicated in puppeteering the downfall of our publicly funded health system.
Is there any way we can stop them from tearing apart AHS, giving it away to their friends for hockey tickets and bad Tylenol and get back to a true arms length relationship between government and health service providers?
