Why does no one discuss bicarbonate supplements?
Bicarbonate is the most concentrated ion in seminal vesicle fluid due to its role in balancing pH, but also is responsible for the osmotic gradient that draws water into the seminal vesicles and the lumen of the seminal vesicles during emission. While typical supplements up regulate the activity of the bicarbonate chloride pump and other ion pumps, such as the sodium potassium pump that are responsible for creating this osmotic gradient, I have never seen any discussion about the ions themselves, being a limiting factor for creating the gradient, and therefore increasing volume or rate of production. I have also seen a handful of studies that seem to suggest individuals with hyperspermia have a diluted concentrations of all ions, except bicarbonate, suggesting that its concentration is the primary contributor to the osmotic in those individuals. I know it is common for athletes to load up on bicarbonate ions from baking soda (which seems to be the most bioavailable source) for the purposes of preventing lactic acid buildup during exercise so is theoretically possible to increase the baseline concentration of bicarbonate in the body without adverse health effects, so the body doesn’t have to rely on the slow process of converting dissolved carbon dioxide from respiration to bicarbonate ions. I would love to get a second opinion on this from anyone may be knowledgeable about the topic.
