seat switching etiquette

My son (18) and I are traveling to Washington, DC, in March. I'm on an extreme budget. It's his first time flying and my first time flying for leisure. I have not selected seats as of yet. If we are not seated together, would it be rude to ask someone to switch with one of us so we can sit together? I don't care about legroom or window seats.
