Is Darwinism about autism?
I’ve had a theory that Halsey might be on the autism spectrum, and as someone who is autistic myself, I’ve noticed some traits that seem to resonate with my own experiences. For example, she once mentioned something along the lines of asking if she could show someone her spider collection, which feels like a very specific, special-interest-type interaction that many people on the spectrum can relate to.
In her song Ego, there’s a line that goes, “wanna be invited but I won’t attend.” I find this incredibly relatable—I often like the idea of being invited and feeling included, but I end up choosing not to attend events because being around too many people can be overwhelming.
In Darwinism, she sings, “What if I’m from outer space?” referencing the feeling of being an outlier. Later, she says, “I let it show and scare my suitors far away,” which speaks to a common experience for many autistic women: being seen as attractive or interesting initially, but when they reveal their true selves, it can intimidate or distance others.
Another set of lyrics from Darwinism that resonates with me is, “When I outstretch my empty hand, I watch them build society… while they’re in paradise, I’m exiled in the sand.” Socializing can be challenging for many autistic people, and this imagery captures the sense of feeling excluded from a world that others seem to navigate effortlessly.
The line, “you all know something that I don’t, you all learned something that I fear I’ll never know, you all grew body parts I fear I’ll never grow,” also stands out to me. Being autistic can sometimes feel like everyone else received a script on how to socialize, while autistic people didn’t—and they’re left trying to figure things out as they go.
Anyone else seeing this or is it just me?
EDIT: H confirmed on the live album listening show everything I had said regarding the neurodivergence and the lyrics (without explicitly mentioning autism), so I hope everyone enjoyed the downvoting.🤷🏻♀️ My post was never meant to be an insult to H as autism or even neurodivergence broadly is not something people choose-it’s a different way of thinking. Limiting in some ways, but amazing in others, which beautifully shows through H’s art.
As a side note, without saying that Halsey is for sure on the spectrum - a lot of females (especially those that are highly verbal) go misdiagnosed by doctors as bipolar, BPD, etc. because that’s always been the go to. So, just because someone has been diagnosed as bipolar/BPD doesn’t mean the doctors got their diagnosis right, especially if the diagnosis was given a while ago. Not a lot of psychiatrists are well-educated on autism in females or adults in general.
