It's not easy being a cinephile.
Of course, by not easy I always mean in reference only to entertainment, there are much more serious problems in the world.
My problem is that I love cinema and therefore I would like to see everything, I would like to see the great films, complete filmographies of great directors, see the horrible films, see many more horror films...etc. However, in addition to not being easy to decide what to see, it also becomes difficult to see what has been decided, I'll give you an example: one of my 10 favorite films of all time is "The seventh seal" by Bergman (of which I also really like other films including for example "Winter Light") but the problem I have with Bergman is that, even though I have seen 9 of his films and among them the worst was at least a passing grade while most were excellent films, every time I want to try to see another of his films I just can't convince myself. Bergman's films are excellent for the most part, but let's say that watching them for me is usually not one of the most exciting experiences, in fact I often found many of his films a bit boring while watching them even if in the end I recognize the high value of the film. So you can say that if I look at the average of the ratings I gave to his films he is perhaps one of my favorite directors, but if I think that I have to continue watching his filmography I instantly lose the desire to do so.
I gave this example but there are many others, such as Sergio Leone who made one of my favorite films so I should be looking forward to seeing one of his other major films and instead when I think that it lasts more than 3 hours I honestly lose the desire completely. In short, all this to say that as a lover of cinema and a cinephile certain films and certain directors must be seen, but it is difficult when the desire clashes with this.
What do you think? Does something similar happen to you too?
I know that many will answer something like "it's not a job so you don't have to force yourself to watch anything" and I disagree because I wouldn't have seen some of my favorite movies if I had just followed my desire and then honestly I never want to see a movie like The Irishman or a Tarkovsky movie or one of the typical Kurosawa movies that lasts more than 3 hours, I've never had the desire to do it in 5 years and so if I just followed my desire I probably would never see them.
