Is there a meaning/explanation as to why Maria dies three times in ‘Silent Hill 2’?

I never grew up with the ‘Silent Hill’ series and the remake was the first game I’ve played. Planning on playing through the originals, but I’ve been wanting to know if there is a meaning to why Maria dies three times throughout the game? (The first being after the Pyramid Head chase, second being her dying in the jail, and the third is at the hands of the two Pyramid Heads).
