Option to NOT check through luggage?

Booking EWR-SIN and SIN-KUL - have two trips back to back. Company policy is economy for trips <5 hours but will be in business for EWR-SIN.

Playing around with the booking engine I found it’s possible to book EWR-SIN-KUL with a 15 hour / overnight transit in Singapore, in business, for the same price as just EWR-SIN. No real reason why I need to do this except for the (admittedly extremely) cheap thrill of flying in the front of the plane for SIN-KUL which I have never done before..

15 hours is plenty of time that I can go home, see my family for a bit, head out again. Can I request to not have my bags checked through and pick them up, then recheck when I check in the next morning for my flight to KUL? Not a dealbreaker if I can’t, but I obviously would rather not lug around my New York / winter clothing in KL if I don’t have to.
