i calculated your birthdays and their averages :) read vvv
the average birthday on r/teenagers and more fun data
introduction
in december of last year, i collected data from a post by kiwi (now a deleted account) and calculated the average height of you all. after posting it, i received a surprising volume support from you. thus, i decided to create a 'sequel' to it. so, after some procrastination, i made a form collecting your birthdays. this post documents the process and results. enjoy! :3
creation and collection
first, we need to collect the data. i hastily created a from in a single afternoon because i procrastinated all the time away and made a post on here. in the form, you were given two options to either submit just your birthday (without the year) or birthdate (with the year). furthermore, i also provided the option to include your name in the submission but i could find a purpose for it lol.
after the seven days were up, i closed the form to an astounding 1,403 responses. i want to thank all of your for your contribution [applause].
cleaning the data
obviously, some of the data aren't usable, for example, i know that you're not born on 1 January of the year 1. post-cleaning, i'd a total of 1,359 data points. only birthdates between 27 january 2004 to 3 february 2012 were collected, which is between 13 to 20 years old (one year grace period).
calculation of birthdays
to calculate these, i assigned each day of the year a number stating from 1 January onwards—i.e. 1 january is day 1, 2 january is day 2 and so on.
after using formulae such as 'LOOKUP' and 'COUNTIF', and also getting frustrated from the software confusing text with numbers and dates, and also after a few hours of calculation (it had to go through hundreds of thousands of calculations), it's done!
results of birthdays
from the 366 days of the year, 325 days had someone born on it, which is almost 89% (no one's born on the leap day). to calculate the most common birthday, i sorted the the data by descending and the mode is 8 june, almost in the middle of the year! here's a heat map of the birthdays:
[refer to graphs section]
to calculate the average, it's a bit more complicated. since, we've assigned each day a number, we can use that in this formula, [Σ(n*d)]/[Σn], where n = number of people, and d = day number. after processing the average was found to be day 188, which is 6 july!
here are some additional information and pretty graphs:
median: 6 july (coincidentally identical to the average)
most common month: may
most common quarter: q2
most common half: h2
[refer to graphs section]
results of birthdates
out of the 1,359 respondents, 960 included their birth year. using the same concepts, 1 january 2004 is assigned as day 1 up until day 2,959.
some maths later...
only 818/2930 days were used (28%). with the same formula, the most common birthdate is 8 November 2008, with a staggering 5 people!
the average is [drumroll] 20 june 2008! which aligns with my expectations from seeing flairs on this sub. this makes the average 16 years old and they would be 17 years old this year! (myself included :3 )
the median is indivisible so it's between 24 and 25 june 2008.
most common month: draw between january and november 2008
most common years:
- 2008
- 2009
- 2007
- 2010
- 2006
- 2005
- 2011
- 2004
- 2012
note that the data for 2012 is skewed because the cutoff is february 2012.
here are the pretty graphs i made
conclusion
from this survey, i've confirmed my unwritten hypothesis right: most of this sub is between the ages of 15 and 17. however, this still does not justify a basis to assume everyone is of these ages.
the data from this subreddit aligns with the global average where births increases towards the end of the year.
furthermore, the spike in members between the years of 2007 to 2009 could be due to the pandemic and lockdown, where more people of this age group was more exposed to the internet and thus this subreddit. more surveys has to be done to prove this statement.
feel free to critique and discuss my finding in the comments. my inbox is open to anyone who is interested.
redcoat's remarks
after some thought, this will be my last statistic which i will publish on this community. unfortunately, publishing statistics on reddit is not a route i want to pursue and commit to in my life. to anyone who is interested in continuing these surveys, feel free to send me any inquiries. :) this is purely a decision made by myself and is not related to the points i will be mentioning below.
i genuinely believe that this community can be a force for good and the mods are doing what they view is the best for the members, but the recent decision to remove image galleries and videos gives the impression that people like me who build in this style are being ignored. when posting this, i struggled to provide high-quality content while bypassing automod. besides, there are also further issues which you may have heard of. i sincerely wish the moderators the best in their endeavours.
acknowledgements
i want to thank kiwi for the inspiration and support in my works. also, i want to forward my appreciation to em (u/CouldntChooseUsernam) for the motivation to document the process of the survey. besides, i want to thank the creators and moderators of r/teenagers for providing a platform for this to be done. furthermore, i want to extend my gratitude to all of those who responded to my previous posts, all of your support, appreciation and criticism has made this possible. next, i want to thank supporters from all across reddit, regardless of the community you're in, we may never have interacted, but you all kept me sane. although people say 'you're just a data point', i appreciate all of you, the respondents of this survey. there was going to be a list here but it couldn't pass automod.
thank you for your time.
if it's your birthday today, i wish you the best birthday ever!
i wish you the best until our next rendezvous. :D
i'm actually tearing up rn
