I’d go back to work for someone else if I were you. Not to be an ass about it but with only six years in the field and no experience in pre-con you can’t really know enough- unless you’re some kind of rare genius (clearly not the case). You’ll need to bring in more knowledgeable people at the very least and they’ll expect to be paid properly. I guess you could just bid small duct-wrap and plumbing pipe jobs or whatever. But who would trust you with anything more? Could you not make the transition from field hand to corporate estimator or PM? Have you spent time as a foreman or superintendent? You gotta build the knowledge base, experience and connections to get in the game on a sustainable level.

I have been a supervisor for 2 years and a superintendent for the last year, I am still working part time with another contractor running their day to day in the field , I have already won contracts for small scale jobs ranging in the 1,000 to 6,000 range but am needing help to start bidding for larger scale jobs, I have very experienced professionals that come work for me from time to time but I need to start bidding bigger jobs in order to bring them on full time.

Gotcha—- to go bigger you’re gonna need a pile of cash (bankroll so you’re not paying your hands off the draw), Verifiable manpower, maybe Small Business or HUB certifications. A Safety compliance officer, bonding and insurance beyond basic liability like OCIP. In addition to all of that you’re going to need credit and buyout discount deals with materials suppliers. Otherwise just soak up all of the small ductwork and plumbing projects you can on the side and stack the funds for a few years. You’ll develop a reputation for getting shit done and find bigger opportunities as you become more prepared. The bidding process is a full time ordeal once you go big. My company (national) puts out 30+ bids a month per market if not more.
